Here’s The Low-Down On The Fashion Shows Happening Post-Lockdown | British Vogue

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t experiencing a bit of an identity crisis during this global pandemic. How does a style blogger and product junkie write about beauty and fashion when isolation is strongly encouraged and there’s nowhere to go? Where would I wear a yellow lace dress? Or a corset swimsuit? Why wear makeup if half of my face is covered and it’s just going to come off on the mask and create skin problems?

Until recently, I felt the idea of fashion shows was nothing short of sadistic; they were just a reminder of places I couldn’t go without the constant worry of catching COVID-19, or having my great mood stifled by the reality of temperature checks, discouraged socializing, or the lack of money to shop. I’m living in robes and sweats, so while I’m not an athleisure girl, I see the appeal now.

Apparently, my issues are poor peoples’ problems because fashion shows are still going on, albeit digitally, and Vogue is here to break down every show as they come in.

Dreaming is still free…

+ Brushes, Fingers, or Sponges: Which Is Better For Foundation Application?

Brushes, Fingers, or Sponges: Which Is Better For Foundation Application?

As I look at the sad state of my Beauty Blender sponges, I’m wondering whether I should go back to using a foundation brush or fork over another $20 plus for a new Beauty Blender. I bought two Beauty Blenders in September 2014 on Amazon for $24, choosing black (because I love black), and I didn’t like that foundation discolors the other colors, making them look dirty even when they aren’t. I thought that was a good thing until I started hearing reports of mold and bugs.  With a black sponge, it is difficult, if not impossible, to tell if the sponge is gathering mold or becoming a haven for bugs. I always make sure I store my sponges where they can air out completely and see no entry points for pests, but I can’t help being a little freaked out.

Which makeup tool is best for for makeup application?
Image via Pinterest

I stopped using foundation brushes because the foundation was looking streaky even after cleaning. I have two that I rotated and tried to clean regularly, but I stopped getting the results I wanted. Instead of buying new ones, I bought the Beauty Blender sponges, and the rest is history. At the time, I didn’t consider that I may have switched foundation formulas and that may have affected the application or that the brush I was using wasn’t clean enough.  Now I find myself at the same crossroad, wondering whether I should continue using a makeup sponge or go back to a foundation brush.

It’s tough being a girl…

Foundation application is already a time-consuming process for me. I have varying degrees of hyperpigmentation so it can be a time-consuming process to get an even canvas, and sometimes I still miss the mark. What I have found is that while I love the way the foundation applies and blends with the Beauty Blender sponge, it is more for light or medium coverage and I need the full coverage capabilities of the foundation brush, which doesn’t, in my opinion, blend as well as the sponge. My mistake was switching from the Mac Studio Fix cream foundation which has better full coverage, to the Studio Fix liquid formula which has more of a light to medium coverage and doesn’t work as well with the brush as the cream formula does.

Which makeup tool is best for foundation application: Foundation brush, fingers or makeup sponge?
Image via Pinterest

Perhaps it’s not about one being better than the other, but knowing how and when to use them. Understanding the differences in each beauty tool is the key to knowing which is best for you. Makeup sponges, specifically the Beauty Blender, give you a better blended and more natural effect than a foundation brush would, especially if you have dry or flaky skin. Sponges will work better because they won’t to allow the product to sit on your face because it presses the foundation into the skin. Refinery29 has a fantastic article on Beauty Blender makeup application techniques for the face, eyes, cheeks, and lips.

Regarding foundation brush application, I found the following tips very helpful. If your foundation brush is streaky, it is most likely dirty and a good cleaning with a makeup brush cleaner (I use the Beauty Blender solid for my sponges and brushes) should take care of that annoying problem.

Foundation Brush Application Tips:

– Use a flat, synthetic foundation brush.

– Use a pea-size amount of product.

– Squeeze product onto the back of your hand to apply.

– Disperse to areas of your face before you blend.

– Use upward and back to apply.

Or…

I can revert to using my fingers, a method I find makeup gurus like Bobbi Brown and Wayne Goss using frequently instead of brushes and sponges. I used to use my fingers exclusively, but stopped because being my self-proclaimed ADD self, I would wonder off to get tea or switch the television channel and unwittingly get makeup all over the place. I recently incorporated it back into my regimen for trouble spots. I found the following tips on Brit + Co.

Which Makeup tool is best for foundation application?

Finger Method Foundation Application Tips:

– Use a dime-size amount of product.

– Squeeze product onto the back of your hand to apply.

– Disperse to areas of your face before you blend.

– Use a gentle touch — your ring and middle finger work best for this.

Brushes, Fingers, or Sponges: Which Is Better For Foundation Application?

Then there is the matter of which tool is more wasteful, another reason I switched to using a sponge. I saw so much foundation being washed away when cleaning the brushes it made me feel like the brushes were absorbing too much product, but I have to wonder the same thing when using the Beauty Blender. Supposedly, the Beauty Blender sponge doesn’t absorb product like standard makeup sponges made of latex and synthetic makeup brushes are also designed not to absorb product. That wasn’t my experience so I’m out as far as  which is less wasteful.

In my case, I probably need all three methods, so I am off to Amazon to look for new Beauty Blender sponges and foundation brushes. I already have the fingers.

Beach Armor: My Influenster Beach Bag Must Haves

As a Colorado resident, there are no “real” beaches, we have reservoirs and so-so sushi. The first real beach I ever saw was when a guy I had a long distance relationship with whisked me to his home in a posh area in New Jersey. I don’t remember where, but I remember that his dad made all the woodwork in the house — the doors, dressers, floors, stairs, railings, the works — there was a lot of gorgeous carpentry in that house.

Bahamas-Beaches

He took me to Manhattan where we ate at the Russian Samovar, took a romantic walk around, and saw Cats. On the way back to his house, we decided to take a spontaneous trip to Atlantic City, my first experience with casinos and a beach. There was a lot of firsts experienced during that visit, and it was a fantastic rendezvous.  I wasn’t that impressed with the Atlantic City beach because it was so littered, but my Bahamas honeymoon was a different story; clean clear water that was so many shades of blue and gorgeous white sand.  By the time I left, my feet were absolutely gorgeous from walking around the beach. Thinking about that made me compile a list of things I would have in my beach bag on Influenster. Good times…

Here is my Influenster list of the essentials I would pack for my next beach trip.

Burt's Bees Lip Balm ~ $3.29 - Beach Armor List Influenster

Burt’s Bees Lip Balm ~ $3.29

Burt’s Bees is my go to lip balm. I always put it on when I am preparing for makeup application as a foundation for my lip cosmetics, much in the way one would apply a moisturizer and/or primer. It’s so worth the money.

Curls Creme Brule Whipped Curl Cream - Beach Armor List Influenster

Curls Creme Brule Whipped Curl Cream ~ $10.99

I use this all of the time especially since I am not bothering with a relaxer this summer, just letting the natural curls fly. It is so moisturizing and keeps hair soft and curls intact with great definition. It has a slight scent so it doesn’t clash with other products.

Maybelline Lash Stiletto - Waterproof Ultimate Length Mascara - Beach Armor List Influenster

Maybelline Lash Stiletto – Waterproof Ultimate Length Mascara ~ 6.97

This is the best mascara ever no matter what formula you use. In situations where I might cry or am near water, Lash Stiletto is perfect. It is not coming off and it makes lashes incredibly long without clumping. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!

M.A.C. Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation - Beach Armor List Influenster

M.A.C. Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation ~ $33

M.A.C. Pro Longwear Waterproof Foundation is the one you want because of the color options, high pigmentation, and staying power. It’s a bit more than a drugstore brand ($33) but it is worth it. Use along with a primer for extra armor against humidity.

M.A.C Prep & Prime BB Beauty Balm SPF 35 - Beach Armor List Influenster

M.A.C Prep & Prime BB Beauty Balm SPF 35 ~ $31

To ensure your makeup doesn’t slide off at the beach a good primer underneath your waterproof foundation will give your makeup extra longevity. M.A.C.’s Beauty Balm is a BB cream so it blurs imperfections and controls oil plus it has SPF 35 just in case you forgot to apply a sunscreen to your face.

L'Oreal® Paris Infallible Pro-Spray & Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray - Beach Armor List Influenster

L’Oreal® Paris Infallible Pro-Spray & Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray ~ $13.66

I’ve used a few makeup setting sprays and L’Oreal is consistent and easy to find as well as being under $15. It sprays on evenly (something I’ve had a problem with other setters), dries quickly, and keeps makeup in place which is a necessity in humid, hot weather.

Maybelline Great Wear Waterproof Eyeliner - Beach Armor List Influenster

Maybelline Great Wear Waterproof Eyeliner ~ $4.79

This eyeliner works great with the Lash Stiletto mascara. It won’t budge and the pigment is good. It goes on easily, so there is no tugging.

e.l.f. Studio Makeup Remover Cleansing Cloths - Beach Armor List Influenster

e.l.f. Studio Makeup Remover Cleansing Cloths ~ $2.99

This stuff is so good and it’s so cheap! I tend to use Neutrogena but I went on an e.l.f. binge one day and bought it and it is fantastic. Don’t get me wrong, Neutrogena is great but is a bit oily, which is fine with me because I can skip a moisturizer and it does disappear into the skin, e.l.f. has a non-greasy finish that still feels hydrated. Great for getting off that waterproof makeup

Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 30 Spray - Beach Armor List Influenster

Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 30 Spray ~ $9.49

I love this stuff. It has a fine mist that offers good coverage and smells good but the scent isn’t overwhelming.

As I am writing I am still compiling a list in my head which would probably fit in a suitcase instead of a beach bag.

Selena Gomez Is Loyal To Louis: The Face Of Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2016 Campaign

Selena Gomez is the face of Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2016 collection as the face of the luxury brands Series.5 line. When I first heard the news, my eyebrows raised, because my view of the singer is still very innocent despite the fact that she is a grown ass woman. Even when she’s playing a villain (“Bad Blood”), there is something childish (in a good way) about her, and there’s nothing naive about Louis Vuitton. But as I look at some of her magazine covers and award show ensembles, this fashion house seems to be a go to for the 23-year-old. She’s been a walking advertisement for the brand for quite some time.

Loius Vuitton’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere and Selena released Instagram photos featuring her in the fall-winter 2016 campaign modeling pieces from the Series.5 collection.

I am loving Selena Gomez’s top and the asymmetrical skirts.

+ Halle Berry Undercut

The Undercut: Halle Berry Highlights A Summer Style Trend

The undercut hairstyle has been a hair trend for quite some time and actress Halle Berry recently jumped on the train and the crowd went wild. She recently posted an Instagram picture of her new summer style; an edgy nape undercut with a lotus etched in and her style choice highlights just how versatile the style can be.

AND FOR MY NE✂️T TRICK…

A post shared by Halle Berry (@halleberry) on

It’s almost commonplace to see a man or woman with some version of the style and as with any fashion or hairstyle trend, undercuts are nothing new. The asymmetrical cut was a predominately male hairstyle that goes all the way back to the Edwardian era. It  was popular from 1920 through 1940 and re-emerged in the 1990s.

Skater subculture and hipsters are credited with bringing it back in 2010, and women quickly clamped onto the style. Soon creative interpretations of the cut emerged such as engraving designs or symbols (known as “hair tattoos”) into the hair, and even glittering it up.

Halle Berry isn’t the only high-profile person to submit; Scarlett Johansson, Cassie, Rihanna, Tilda Swinton, and Natalie Dormer have or are currently wearing this trend. My favorite looks are interpretations created by everyday people who are their own stylist.

Berry’s version (the nape undercut) is a great summer style and highly versatile — she can pull it up into a ponytail or a bun to add some edge or contrast to an otherwise conservative outfit, or cover it up with her longer tresses when she has to be a professional.

Dormer’s look (the side undercut) is a little more in your face and requires more maintenance, although she can always sweep her hair to the side to cover the shaven part. In other words; it’s a commitment. Celebrity hairstylist and Mizani global artistic director Cesar Ramirez told PeopleStyle that achieving the desired result requires a professional.

“This technique takes a lot of skill and talent. After buzzing the area a straight razor is used to etch out the pattern. A stencil can be used or the pattern can be drawn on the scalp with a eyeliner pencil to get a really clean outcome.”

Until recently, elaborate nail designs and lengths were a favorite way to accessorize, but less flamboyant nails are trending and non-traditional hair color choices and varying versions of the undercut are huge. It’s what I would consider punk inspired (but what isn’t lately?) and an attention magnet, so if you aren’t into calling attention to yourself, this style isn’t for you.

+ Beyonce CFDA Fashion Icon

Beyoncé’s CFDA Speech And That Givenchy Suit

I completely forgot about the Council of Fashion Designer of America (CFDA) until my half-listening to Wendy Williams caught her going off about Beyoncé’s Givenchy suit — she wasn’t a fan. Queen Bey was crowned the CFDA Fashion Icon and according to Vogue, many were speculating that Michelle Obama would get the honors this being her last year as First Lady and all, but the honor went to Beyoncé and she took to the stage in a bejeweled pinstripe Givenchy suit and a wide-brimmed hat. (Is it me, or is she really into wide-brimmed hats and Givenchy lately?) Before we get to the suit, let’s talk about her speech.

Beyonce's speech at the CFDA's

Image via Vogue

Her speech was, in my opinion,  an eloquent “How ya like me now” to all the high-end designers that shunned Destiny’s Child back in the day, and wouldn’t dress them for high-profile events. Her mother (Tina Knowles) and her uncle made their outfits, and she made sure the audience was in on the fact that without their struggles, sacrifices, and determination, she wouldn’t be where she is today professionally and fashionably.

Beyoncé’s grandmother was a seamstress and fashion is in her blood. It would be interesting to see her actually design a line. I know she co-designed House of Deréon with her mom in 2004,  and she sells Miss Tina by Tina Knowles at Walmart, but I would love to see Beyoncé pull a Victoria Beckham.

I digress…

The Carter's in Givenchy - Image via Vogue.

The Carter’s in Givenchy – Image via Vogue.

Was Givenchy one of the fashion houses that rejected Destiny’s Child? If so, this would be a serious case of turn the other cheek. Riccardo Tisci, the creative director for Givenchy has dressed Beyoncé for a while; the majority of her Met Gala appearances are courtesy of Givenchy, and the rest of the Carter’s (Blue Ivy and Jay Z) were dressed in Givenchy at the CFDA event. And while they can afford it, I doubt she pays anything when “rocking her Givenchy dress,” so all I can say is “My, how things have changed.”

Refinery29 Shares How ColourPop Makes Eyeshadow And Lipstick

If you are a fan of Refinery29, you are well aware of their recent ColourPop series; a trip to ColourPop’s L.A. headquarter’s culminated into an entire series about the brand, including an interview with founders Laura and John Nelson, a look at how they make their cosmetics, and why it’s so inexpensive (not that we are complaining, and I love Laura’s answer).

A division of Seed Cosmetics, also founded by the Nelson’s, ColourPop has made quite an impact on the cosmetics world in the two short years it has been on the scene. The brains behind the brand that produces Kylie Jenner’s and Kim Im’s  cosmetics lines, the Nelson siblings were generous with their time and secrets, sharing how they make their eyeshadows and lipsticks.

There is one thing that confuses me about this company; why don’t they have international shipping? In almost every Instagram picture I see there are requests and inquisitions from all over the world about the company’s failure to ship internationally. It is massively popular for many reasons — it’s inexpensive and it has high-profile celebrities and beauty influencers behind it.  It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but I’m not running ColourPop, and seeing as the Nelson siblings seem to be smart and sane people, I’m sure there is a method to their madness.

Follow the links and take a peek at how they make their cosmetics. It’s fascinating.

I Want: Naja Nude For All Lingerie – REAL Nude Colored Underwear

Naja nude toned color range

Naja nude color swatches. Photo: Naja

I know, I’m a bad mommy. I have been focusing on passing a writing internship and my blog has severely suffered. Now that I have accomplished that task — proud author at Inquisitr News — I can breathe and let my mind wonder about such things as beauty product reviews, red carpet looks, and baffling trends.

There were many things going on that I wanted to write about — skin lightening, lampshading, and those trying to have it all no matter who is inconvenienced — but the news that Naja just released a lingerie line that understands that the traditional nude tone does not fit all peaked my interest. I too believe that “Nude” is a matter of perspective.

Soon New York subways will help promote Naja’s #NudeForAll diversity campaign featuring real women with varying body types and occupations wearing the LA-based lingerie brand’s multi-toned underwear. Up until now, nude underwear was a one-size-fits-all affair and everybody had the choice of the standard nude hue, black or white.

Catalina Girald, Naja’s CEO and creative director and a Stanford business graduate, got the idea to produce a wider variety of nude tones after she noticed how the nude ankle wraps Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas wore drastically differed from her skin tone.

One of the reasons other brands have not stepped up to the plate is because of limitations. Girald’s business savvy and connections have allowed her to bypass order minimums that prevent other brands from producing a wider range of nude tones. It’s an innovation that is desperately needed. A company statement explains:

“Naja’s super-fast supply chain can produce in one month instead of 12 months, with minimum order quantities at 200 units per style instead of 10,000.”

Naja's eco-friendly bra and panty set

Naja’s eco-friendly bra and panty set. Photo: Naja

Naja was developed by Girald in 2013, and actress Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) joined in 2015, and they have built a company that empowers women, and is socially and environmentally conscious. One of their passions is helping women in Latin American countries support their families by paying them fair wages for sewing the lingerie bags the bras arrive in. Health benefits and education stipends for their children are also included. Also, Naja has an eco-friendly collection made from recycled plastic bottles.

The brand has paired each of its colors with a major makeup brand’s foundation shade to determine which nude shade is best; foundation colors from Nars, Bobby Brown, Mac, and L’Oreal are listed. The collection includes three styles of underwear, in sizes XS to XXL, and one memory foam cup underwire bra, in sizes 32 to 40 and cups A to DDD. The bra sells for $39 and the underwear range from $15 to $18, and the plan is to introduce more styles and colors in the future.

The result is a high-quality product that is made with hand-harvested Peruvian cotton, bonded and seamless bra straps, and breathable memory foam cups, that are nestled inside varying colors and unexpected prints that are stylish and trendy.

The Nude For All campaign can be seen online and at the Bedford L stop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and the collection will be available May 30.

+ Valentia Clay Mask Detoxifies

Must Haves: Valentia Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask

It’s time for another product review from the Valentia skin care. I was sent a jar of the Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask through Brandbacker and the first thing I noticed was the smell. It was unlike any clay mask I have ever used which is typically St. Ives Timeless Skin Mineral Clay Firming Mask or Freeman Avocado & Oatmeal Clay Mask. Typically, clay masks smell like clay;  earthy, fresh and clean and the texture is cool and smooth.

Valentia Detoxifying Clay Mask

Valentia Detoxifying Clay Mask

The Valentia Skin Detoxifying Mask has a stronger scent, although not overwhelming and the closest I can come to describing the smell would be fruity and flowery blossoms, but you can still smell the clay.  It has a slightly gritty texture, due to the Hibiscus and Cranberry Fibers in the mixture that exfoliates the skin in addition to lending their anti-aging properties. Kaolin Clay is naturally detoxifying and draws out impurities allowing the pores to shrink. Stem cells are increasingly being used in beauty and health products and this mask contains Plant Stem Cells which reduces the level of pro-aging toxins in the skin while soothing the skin and evening skin tone.

valentia-CM-4-WM

Up close view of the Valentia Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask.

I used it twice in a five-day period and I liked it not just because it smelled nice, but because I could tell the pores were smaller after both uses. The second time I used a facial sauna to open the pores even more (I don’t know why I didn’t think of that when I used the Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask) to really allow the product to get in there and draw out the dirt, oil, and makeup. I am incredibly happy with the results.

Valentia Detoxifying Clay Mask

Valentia Detoxifying Clay Mask

I came away impressed with it primarily because of the reduced pore size and firmness. It is also a product that makes sense because it doesn’t claim to take out impurities while containing ingredients that are not pure. Valentia products are organic, alcohol and paraben free, and cruelty-free. After each use of the Valentia Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask, I used the Valentia Clear Lift Serum or the Royal Rose Hydrating Serum, and Valentia True Glow Eye Cream and the combination of products made my face feel deeply cleansed and dewy.

+ Kristen Stewart at the 2016 Met Gala

I Barely Recognized Kristen Stewart At The 2016 Met Gala: ‘Manus x Machina’ Event

There were a few outstanding looks at the 2016 Met Gala: Manus x Machina event, but I really liked Kristen Stewart’s look; there was something provocative about it and I barely recognized her. Kristen Stewart’s interpretation of the Manus x Machina theme was really more focused on her hair and makeup.  Participants were asked to embrace fashion and technology; the future of fashion. I’m not sure she embraced the technical aspect of the challenge, but she doesn’t look like she took any fashion steps backward.

She’s what I consider an enigma; there is something so confident yet panicked about her. She’s one of those rare celebrities that isn’t desperate for attention. While scrolling through the Gala photos on The Cut, I had to stop and stare because it didn’t look like her, but I could see her in her outfit if that makes any sense. In other words, she pulled it off, and she did it in Chanel, but a lot of the attendees did. Chanel was a prominent fixture.

Stewart wore a dress from the Chanel Fall 2016 RTW collection (actually my favorite dress from that collection) but it goes beyond her dress; it was the whole package. It was minimalist; barely-there lips, one earring (she doesn’t seem to wear earrings), the necklaces she wore were hidden beneath her dress, and her hair was haphazard. Her makeup featured silver graphic eye shadow and dark liner. Her presentation wasn’t overdone or cartoon-ish, it was still fashion-forward. She could have easily pulled this look together herself without a stylist.

Kristen Stewart wearing a look from the Chanel
Kristen Stewart wearing a look from the Chanel 2015/16 Cruise collection.

She seems to favor Chanel, she wore it to the Met Gala in 2013, she skipped the Met Gala in 2015 in favor of a Chanel show in Seoul, where she wore a look from the Chanel 2015/16 Cruise collection, and again for this year’s Met Gala. I understand her Chanel obsession and personally, the look from the Seoul show would have worked at the 2016 Met Gala, perhaps better than the one she wore.

Denver Fashion Week Spring ’16

velvet-wolf-12-wm

A look from Velvet Wolf at Denver Fashion Week Spring ’16.

Let me start out by saying that I really enjoyed the Denver Fashion Weekend Spring ’16 festivities, a multi-day event that features local and national designers and boutiques, along with hair shows and awards ceremonies. Unfortunately, I missed the 303 Awards/Southwest Hairstyling Awards on Night One, but celebrity stylist Tabatha Coffey received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

In Focus host, Eden Lane was holding court, and without too much criticism (I can’t imagine what it takes to pull off a production like this on multiple nights), compared to my experience at the Fall ’15 shows, DFW Spring ’16 was a massive improvement. It was better organized, the press didn’t have to fight to get into place, and the overall mood was less manic. This production had their act together; they were much friendlier (even after I knocked a stack of cards off of a pole), the security staff was more personable, the press was given more respect, and the people attending this event were much more festive and much less bitchy than the last fashion event.

Eden Lane hosting Night Three at Denver Fashion Week '16.

Eden Lane hosting Night Three of Denver Fashion Week ’16.

I should have had this blog out last week, but I wasted a lot of time trying to unsuccessfully edit fashion week videos while trying to learn a new job, so please excuse me in advance for the janky video and extreme lateness. Last year’s footage was so bad I barely bothered to post anything. This time was no different. The Fall ’15  runway was cool but complicated, and we were situated on the side next to a platform with a lone photographer on it. Thankfully, the person I brought for photography was taller than my 5′ 2″ frame, so he was more successful with photos. This year, I was told that we could have used that near-empty platform, but no one told us.

lynn-lashes-pj-wm

Back to work after having to bail on Night Two of Denver Fashion Week. The one and only time I successfully applied false lashes.

This year was no different as far as lousy positioning, but at least there was a reason for it. Night Three was PACKED and so was that platform. Apparently, there was a schedule change because when I RSVP’d the event, the night I attended was scheduled to be a hair show.  I was a little bummed because I had to bail on Night Two at the last-minute and I was more interested in the fashion than the hair, although I had planned on going to both. To be honest, I was probably more bummed about the fact that I had finally applied false eyelashes without them coming off or getting adhesive all over the place, and I had nowhere to go. I can’t be the only person who hates to waste time and a good makeup job.

A streetwear look from Denver Fashion Week.

This was the cutest outfit. This local blogger knew how to mix her prints. The photo does not do this outfit justice.

I should probably go back; the kick-off event for DFW Spring ’16 was Red Pearl, a fashion comedy movie by Stacy Barton and Jessica McGaugh. The comedy-drama movie with fashion overtones is based in Colorado, and is about Scarlet (Desira Pesta), a recent transplant from Ohio fresh out of fashion school. She’s having difficulty making friends professionally and personally, and she’s nursing a broken heart as well. Project Runway’s Mondo Guerra makes an appearance as her mentor and I thought he was in attendance, but it turned out that the gentleman I mistook as Guerra was not. One would have expected him to turn up for the premiere of a movie he is in, but…

mondo-look-alike-RPearl

The gentleman I mistook for Mondo Guerra.

My favorite performances were from Scarlet’s creepy apartment manager (William Leiren), and her married lover and neighbor (Matt Block), whom I met at the fashion show. He walked right past us and I said, “He’s cute,” and my daughter/photographer said, “That’s that guy from the movie, her neighbor.” Being who I am, I ran after him. He’s all kinds of cute. That movie does not do him justice. He was beyond charming and very funny. He was also taking part in the shows.

Final walk for Soignee.

I immediately ran into the Beauty For Real booth at the bazaar and the rep. went to work selling us on how innovative the makeup line is. Ok, the lip gloss has a mirror AND a light on the applicator. Hello, where have you been all of my life? She told me Leslie Munsell, the founder of Beauty For Real was walking in the show.

When I left Beauty For Real counter, I perused a couple of apparel vendors, and then ran into Sam LaBella, hairstylist and makeup artist at Family Affair representing the Balmain Hair Couture line. Remember when I said I had never heard of Balmain Hair? Ta-da! She was so much fun, and I had the best time with her. She even spritzed my dusty bun with a shining product. In the middle of entertaining me, she also provided me with a little more education about the line and where it is headed. Balmain Hair won’t stay hush-hush for long.

While I enjoyed every show, the standouts for me were Velvet Wolf, Kouture, and ILy Iley. I am not an outerwear fan per se, but as far as a physical reaction, I loved Royal Outerwear. The styling and makeup was inspiring and Torell Madsen, A.K.A. Tory, was especially breathtaking. I may have to relax my style a bit and embrace street wear more.

Royal-outerwear-1-WM

I recorded a few of the shows but I didn’t get them all. Unfortunately, I didn’t get photos or footage of Femme Fatale Intimates and Georgine NYC, which I truly regret. Poor battery life and difficulty holding the camera with so many bloggers and photographers jockeying for position dictated I sit out a few shows so again, please enjoy the sketchy camera work. The fact that there were so many people in attendance tells me that the popularity of the event is growing, as it should. A special shout-out to my photographer Raven Refuerzo, a.k.a., my kid. Denver Fashion Week Spring ’16 was a great production and a lot of fun. Can’t wait till the fall shows.

Must Haves: Valentia Clear Lift Revitalizing Serum

valentia-CL-JG-wm

Jessie’s Girl Satin Finish Nail Color in Sea Glass

I’m back with another sponsored review of a Valentia product. This time, I was given a bottle of the Clear Lift Revitalizing Serum, which is supposed to increase elasticity by increasing the circulation in your skin. The Valentia line of beauty products are fascinating to me because while each product has an individual role, all of the ones I’ve tried so far also moisturize,  minimizes fine lines, and brightens skin tone.

Unlike the Royal Rose Hydrating Serum, a product that has a few perks that take time to present themselves (although the ability to give moisturizer staying power was immediate), the Clear Lift Revitalizing Serum’s benefits showed up almost immediately. This is another night time serum and what I noticed was a difference in tone by the second day. I noticed a difference in the appearance, a glow or a freshness – like I had given it a good scrub by the fourth day. One of the ingredients in the serum is Lactic Acid which is an exfoliant that speeds up skin cell turnover.

valentia-CL-2-wm

The other ingredients are: Seaweed which helps skin’s absorption of oxygen, Licorice to even out skin tone, Gotu Kola for skin firmness, and Argan oil which reduces water loss and helps with skin elasticity. When  I noticed that the Clearlift Revitalizing Serum contains Argan oil — something I use often with my moisturizer and hair care products for additional moisture — I stopped using the Royal Rose Hydrating Serum and my Argan oil In order to properly review the Clear Lift Revitalizing Serum. My skin still felt hydrated without the extra Argan oil and hydrating serum, and the Clear Lift Revitalizing Serum appears to give it a buffed smoothness.

My thoughts — I like the Valentia Clear Lift Revitalizing Serum. I’m anxious to see if consistent use will produce firmer, plumper skin, but it provided me with buffed skin and enough hydration to bypass an additional source of moisture.

Is The Spray On Nail Polish Worth The Splurge? — Enterspree

I don’t often reblog, but I had to give props to a fellow beauty blogger, Chanele Edwards at Enterspree for this review of Nails Inc. Paint Can nail polish. I wrote a blog post in December when I first heard about it praising the innovation but hypothesizing the pitfalls of a product that wasn’t available in the U.S. then. Chanelle commented that she had never heard of the product until reading my post, but found a can for half the price in the U.K., where she lives. I begged her to review it – she did. So today, I am posting her review of the product. Please read her post it’s very informative, and definitely watch the video. I had no idea she is so beautiful!

A spray on nail polish? How revolutionary! Nails Inc London have released the worlds first ever spray on nail polish and the internet has been going crazy. It was very difficult to get my hands on one but I managed to grab the last one in stock at Selfridges London for a discounted price of […]

I Didn’t Know Balmain Had a Hair Care Line Either

Noémie-Lenoir

Balmain Hair muse Noémie Lenoir.

It was during Paris Fashion Week that the I discovered Balmain was into hair. Should I feel stupid for not knowing the French fashion brand extended to a hair care line? This revelation came just yesterday while reading an article on Business of Fashion about Balmain’s new custom wig venture – an extension of the already existing Balmain Hair Couture line. During Paris Fashion Week, Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadi seemingly swapped hair colors at the Balmain Fall 2016 RTW show and of course, everybody went nuts because those two can’t cut their nails without it becoming breaking news. Sorry (not sorry), I’m just so sick of those two. Anyway…

Devin-windsor-gigi-hadid

Balmain Hair Couture muse Devon Wilson and Gigi Hadid as brunettes.

According to the piece, that was an introduction of sorts to Balmain Hair, a custom-made wig and hair extensions service. The intended fuss about the hair color swap got tails wagging about the orientation of the wigs the chosen were wearing , expansion news, and the admittance that the hair care line is largely unknown. Now, I don’t feel so stupid.

Alessandra Ambrosio, a favorite Balmain runway model is shown with her natural hair color in the Pre-spring 2016 show, and again wearing a Balmain custom-made wig in the Fall 2016 show at PFW 2016. Joan Smalls, Rose Huntington-Whitely, and Lily Donaldson were among the models walking with one of those coveted pieces.

Alessandra_Ambrosio-balmain-spring-2016

Balmain Hair Couture brand isn’t new if you are heavily immersed in the beauty scene or in Europe – it’s been around for 40-years slowly making its way into high-end salons and fancy-schmancy fashion sites. Currently, the Balmain Hair repertoire consists of extensions, styling products, styling tools, and now custom-made wigs. You’ll have to do some jet-setting if you want one of those custom-made, 100 percent human hair wigs. The Balmain Hair wigs are only made at their location in the Paris at 13, rue Royal which is headed by Nabil Harlow a “master hair designer.” Yeah, you’re going to need super model money in order to afford one.

Balmain-hair-products

However, if you want their Argan Moisturizing Elixir ($43), or instant extensions ($390), that’s available onlinealthough the company encourages you to seek a professional for extension installation. For professionals, there are classes to teach you how to install their products. I’ve watched some of their tutorials, it looks very involved. There are 5,000 hair salons worldwide (300 in the US) that carry Balmain Hair, and “Prestige Salon”  has been created to place their products in exclusive style focused salons.

Balmain joins the likes of  Wendy Williams, Jessica Simpson, practically the entire cast of RHOA, and Beverly Johnson – who have been on the hair extension/wig train for quite some time. Balmain has stepped up as a response to the apparent explosion of couture wig and hair extensions. Well, when everybody is trying to be Beyoncé, that’s gonna happen, and Bey ain’t wearing Sally Beauty Supply hair.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with ILNP Fall Semester & Incoco Green With Envy

IMG_1433-resize-WM

Incoco Green with Envy

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!! I thought I would challenge myself today and see if I could write a post in an hour. I am stepping up my speed, (or trying to) and I thought, I’ll do something celebratory – St. Patrick’s nail art with Incoco Green With Envy. I bought this nail applique set last year at Walgreen’s along with Pot Of Gold and Happy go Lucky, which I posted lasted last year.  I didn’t get to post this one then, so I thought I would do so now and unfortunately, if you are really into plaid and tartan, you can only get it on Ebay.

IMG_1414-resize-WM

I had just used my OPI Avoplex Nail & Cuticle Replenishing Oil and it shows…

Incoco Green With Envy

This year I am wearing ILNP Fall Semester.  Unfortunately, I didn’t take pictures in a lighter setting before the polish started chipping so I will have to do another manicure with this color. It really is gorgeous and changes color depending on the light.  Here it looks like a forest green but it really is more of a teal. ILNP has the most gorgeous holographic and chrome polishes.

So my quicky post took me one hour and forty-eight minutes. Not bad. Have a super-duper great St. Patrick’s Day. I am staying home with lamb stew and red wine.

Must Haves: Valentia Royal Rose Hydrating Serum

IMG_3009-edit-WM

Valentia Royal Rose Hydrating Serum

Today, I am reviewing another product from Valentia; the Royal Rose Hydrating Serum. I was so impressed with the True Glow Eye Cream, and the Ultra Plumping Hydrating Mask that I jumped all over the opportunity to write another sponsored post. After applying the serum for a couple of nights,  I decided to approach evaluating it differently than instructed because applying it at night and then waking up to perform my morning beauty regime left very little time to determine its effectiveness. Instead, I implemented the Valentia serum into my morning regimen; washing my face with Neutrogena Naturals Fresh Cleansing + Makeup Remover, applying the serum on my face, neck, and ears, (let’s not neglect the ears) and applying Neutrogena Naturals  Multi-Vitamin Nourishing Moisturizer, and finally Valentia True Glow Eye Cream. This method allowed me to evaluate the serum while I was awake and I could judge the effectiveness throughout the day.

IMG_3070-edit-WM

Valentia Royal Rose Hydrating Serum and ILNP Fall Semester on my nails.

My impression of the Valentia Royal Rose Hydrating Serum is that it is a great moisturizer booster. My skin was more hydrated at the end of the day with the serum than with my moisturizer alone. Typically, if I feel I need a bit more moisture I will add a drop or two of 100 percent Argan oil, but that wasn’t necessary during the testing phase. The serum is lightweight and absorbs quickly, my moisturizer glided on and the slight rose scent disappeared quickly, unfortunately for me.

The company claims that the ingredients in the serum; Rose Damascena, Rosehip seed, Lavender, Vitamin B, Bearberry, and Evening Primrose oil:

  • Calms and soothes skin,
  • Deeply moisturizes and nourishes skin
  • Smoothes skin tone and texture
  • Provides antioxidant protection
  • Fades away sun spots, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation

Many of the benefits the serum claims to offer (heals the skin, skin lightening ) couldn’t be determined within the time allotted for the campaign, but what I did notice was that in addition to being a great moisturizer booster, it had a “calming effect” on my sensitive skin when I  applied it after using my exfoliating cleansing brush.  My skin didn’t feel as “inflamed” once I applied the serum. This product has become a permanent part of my daily skin care ritual.

As a thank you for reading my review, I am offering a 20% off of the purchase of Valentia’s Royal Rose Hydrating Serum. Use Promo Code  8MLVQYLC at checkout and hurry, the coupon is only good until 4/11/2016, and let me know how the serum worked out for you.

I Want – Issey Miyake’s Bao Bao Bag

Look 1 ~ Issey Miyake Crystal Series Shoulder Bag SS16 – $1,250.

I was smack dab in the middle of ogling Chanel’s Fall 2016 collection when I ran into this beauty, the Issey Miyake Bao Bao Crystal Shoulder Bag. Isn’t it fascinating? It must be EVERYTHING if it made me stop looking a Chanel. This is, as most things are on my “I Want” list, completely unattainable, but a girl can dream, right?…

issey-miyake-geo-jacket

Just like the Bao Bao bags, Issey Miyake’s apparel frequently conforms and transforms into dramatic shapes. The Issey Miyake Geometric Jacket.

Issey Miyake, in addition to producing my favorite perfume, is the most innovative fashion designer alive. The Bao Bao line has been around for a sixteen years and I am ashamed to say that this is my first time seeing one. I really like how the bags transform to accomodate whatever is in your bag be it a file or a bag of oranges, after all, the concept is “shapes by chance.”

This gorgeous creature is from the Prism series and I want you to look at the details; the bag is made out of small triangles that are placed on top of mesh fabric. It is so architectural and futuristic. I’m completely in love. Triangles placed on mesh makes this concept so transformative.

But not as in love as I am with the Platinum; it reflects like a mirror, so eye-catching, a total hater instigator.  Check out the incredible Bao Bao bags from Issey Miyake.

Must Haves: Valentia True Glow Eye Cream and Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask

IMG_2963

I’m one of those skeptics when it comes to anti-aging products primarily because most of the products I have tried have been more hype than anything else or they don’t mesh well with makeup. Not this one. I received two products from Valentia, the True Glow Eye Cream, and Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask to try in exchange for an honest review. I am honestly impressed.

IMG_2914

Valentia True Glow Eye Cream

Valentia True Glow Eye Cream:

The eye cream has a slight scent, nothing overwhelming and it is extremely  hydrating. The consistency is smooth and creamy and it instantly absorbs into the skin. I can still feel the effects of the morning application when I go to do the evening application. A little goes a long way and it doesn’t cake up or leave a residue when I apply foundation or eyeshadow. I have also found that it also does double duty as a primer because my eyeshadow had more staying power.  I used it every day for two weeks and I really like it. It’s not overly expensive and it is well worth the money. This won’t be sitting around unused in my cabinet.

IMG_2958

Valentia Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask:

I was skeptical about the pumping aspect but what I will say is that my skin did look more radiant after the first use of the Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask. As proof, this picture of me putting on the eye cream shows dry flaky skin. Three days later, I used the mask and there was a noticeable difference immediately, I mean immediately, without a moisturizer and my skin was glowing.

IMG_2812

Before: This image of me applying the Valentia eye cream shows dry, flaky skin.

IMG_2920

After: Image of my skin after using the Valentia mask.

I’m wasn’t sure about the plumping aspect initially, but I did notice that my forehead friends were less prominent. To be sure, I used it again six days later, and once again, my skin did have a radiance, I didn’t imagine it. I loved it so much I didn’t want it covered up with makeup. The tingling concerned me initially because I always associate that sensation with an allergic reaction, but the tingling is expected according to the instructions and frankly, if a little tingling is going to make me look more alive, I’m fine with it. For me, this worked better for me than my glycolic peel.

IMG_2922

Valentia Ultra Plumping Hydration Cream

Valentia claims that the combination of a Silk Protein Amino Acid blend, Botanical Hyaluronic Acid, and Organic Sea Buckthorn Oil in their mask boosts collagen production, increases skin radiance, reduces fine lines, and secures skin moisture and it absolutely does. I can’t say enough about the eye cream, I love it. It definitely hydrates and tightens and brightens the eye area. It has a powerful antioxidant, Astanxanthin, Vitamin C, and Organic Rose Hip making it an intense and effective anti-aging tool. If you are looking for better results from your skin regimen, try the Valentia True Glow Eye Cream, and Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask.

Denver Bronco Super Bowl 50 Celebration Style

broncos-nail-art-2-cosmo

I thought I would produce a quick little post at 1:30 in the morning to gloat. The Denver Broncos have won Super Bowl 50 and now it’s time to celebrate by putting away our game day apparel and put on some celebratory blue and orange (and gold for the golden anniversary) clothing and rocking those Bronco nails and makeup a little bit longer. While blue and orange can be a difficult color combination to pull off, it can also be mesmerizing when done correctly.

I live in Denver so we’ll be wearing blue and orange for the foreseeable future, and I would encourage all Bronco fans to stretch it out as long as possible. Again, congratulations to Peyton Manning and the Broncos on another Super Bowl win and for showing the doubters why this team has been one of the top teams in the NFL for decades.

I Want: Michael Kors’ Floral Mary Janes

michael-kors-pre-fall-2016-lookbook-07-shoes

First of all, I loved, loved, loved, Michael Kor’s Pre-Fall 2016 collection. I am so stunned and surprised by some of the elements he incorporated into the current trends, that my mindset for the couture shows is completely blown. I’m not a pink girl, but I NEED that pink and white mink coat. What I couldn’t get over is the floral Mary Jane’s in black and white, and black and army green. I’ll take them both.

Kors who rejects the label “Pre-Fall” and prefers to use “Transeasonal” because it’s less limiting, says he approaches design this way: “She’s got to fall in love.” Mission accomplished.

Beautyblender’s Liner Designer Promises To Be A Triple Threat.

beautyblender-cat-eye-1

Beautyblender is one of my favorite beauty tools. I own two Beauty Blender sponges, the solid cleanser, and the Sur.face Pro palette, and I was visiting The Zoe Report when I saw that the brand is introducing its newest innovation coming this spring, the Liner Designer. I am not cat eye savvy and try as I might, I can not get a satisfying result. I came to the conclusion that I am just not cat eye material and my inner feline may never be realized. Perhaps this is a game changer for me. Watch out…

beautyblender-cat-eye-lead

Straight line. Every time.

This triangle-shaped tool works as a guide allowing the user to create various versions of the cat eye more easily. The perfect cat-eye (a trend that never seems to go out of style) is achieved by painting any eyeliner formula onto the flexible disk, then dragging it across the eye. I’m honestly trying to visualize how that will work. seeing as there are no examples available presently. I am going to assume (and you know what they say about assuming) that it is akin to a stencil?

beautyblender-cat-eye-embed-2

The flexible disk is housed in a travel case that has a 5x magnified mirror and suction cup (which confuses me). It can also be used as an eyeshadow  and mascara shield in addition to a tool to make your lip liner sharper.

The Beautyblender Liner Designer will be available at beautyblender and Sephora for $18 this spring.

EOS Lip Balm Facing Blistering Criticism But Who Is At Fault?

Britney-Spears-using-EOS-lipbalm

Britney Spears using EOS Summer Fruit lip balm. Image: EOS

I was shocked to see the news reports about EOS lip balm causing blisters and rashes. I love the stuff, it was an impulse buy last Christmas while shopping for others and I’ve always found it to be a great product. The egg shape is cute and attention getting and the vibrant colors are cheerful. Otherwise known as Evolution of Smooth, the brand has an extremely high customer rating and a plethora of celebrity brand ambassadors. The EOS site has an entire section “EOS BUZZ-CELEBRITY FANS” where celebrities like Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus post selfies with the pod in hand, helping to elevate the popular pod to cult status.

eos-lawsuit-w352

EOS Summer Fruit lip balm.

All the excitement is about the “Summer Fruit” version which seems to be causing blisters, rashes, and extreme dryness in some people. Rachel Cronin says it caused her to develop a rash all over her mouth within hours of applying it. She kept reapplying it not thinking that a product that was made from natural ingredients and touted to keep lips smooth and soft would be the cause of her dry coarse lips. Within 24-hours, she had a severe rash and blistering all over her mouth that took 10 days to go away.

rachel-cronin-rash

Rachel Cronin and her EOS rash.

Cronin isn’t the only person experiencing adverse reactions to the product. Celebrity vulture attorney Mark Geragos is behind a class action suit claiming a “substantial number of consumers” have experienced allergic reactions to the product that include loss of pigment, bleeding, and cracking with symptoms lasting anywhere from days to months, and some claim to have permanent scars. The suit is asking for damages and corrective advertising.

There seems to be some confusion and skepticism about what is causing these reactions because the EOS lip balm is 99 percent natural, gluten-free, and organic. It is approved by the FDA and according to the company’s tweet about the matter, goes through rigorous testing and exceeds the industries quality and safety standards.

eos-twitter-statement

Dr. Marie Jhin told Huffington Post that people can be allergic to natural products and the most likely culprit is Vitamin E, listed as tocopherol in the EOS lip balm.  Jhin suggests avoided products that contain Vitamin E, beeswax, perfumes, and fragrance, and use products like petroleum or Aquaphor.

IMG_2740

My ‘collection’ of products: Burt’s Bees lip balm, Aquaphor healing ointment, Neutrogena lip moisturizer, and Blistex medicated lip balm.

Clearly, that isn’t my mindset and that’s why this lawsuit irritates me. I have a lot of allergies and I have suffered severe reactions, including but not limited to rashes and blisters that covered my body and it never occurred to me to sue anybody, I simply stopped using the product. If I eat lasagna I itch, get congested, tired, and experience stomach cramping; that doesn’t mean there is something wrong with the lasagna, it means there is something wrong with me. It never occurred to me to sue Pepperidge Farms because eating their raspberry strudel gave me the runs.

Every mishap isn’t the fault of someone or something else. Sometimes it’s on you. I really like this product, and Geragos always goes on a publicity witch hunt when he sees dollar signs because he thinks that enough bad publicity will make his latest ‘mark’ cave in and pay up. The problem with being a victim for profit is that the majority suffers and the minority cleans up. The company is forced to change a product that was fine to begin with and their reputation is tarnished simply because there are people in our society that prefer to adopt a ‘victim mentality’ instead of using common sense and taking responsibility for their own maladies. If your lips don’t like EOS or any other product,  stop using it. Use your powers for good. It’s as simple as that.

Microbead-free Options

scrub

Using my Conair Power Facial Cleanser with St. Ives Apricot Scrub Nail color: Jessie’s Girl Black Satin.

I’m sure you’ve heard that the senate has just passed the Microbead-free Waters Act of 2015 that bans the production of products containing microbeads. If exfoliation is part of your beauty regimen (and it should be) you may have products in your home such as body washes, scrubs and toothpaste that contain microbeads. You may have noticed that your favorite scrub is suddenly unavailable and that is because most major brands have already started to phase out their products that have microbeads, either way, it’s time to find other products to remove dead skin without killing ourselves and wildlife.

St-ives-sample

St. Ives Apricot Scrub made with ground corn kernels and walnut seeds infused with apricot extract.

I use St. Ives Apricot Scrub by choice, not because I was aware of the dangers of microbeads; I like the consistency and texture and it works. I have used products in the past that contained microbeads but I didn’t feel there was enough of the exfoliation ingredient to make me feel it was buffing my skin.

Lush-feature

Lush Cosmetic’s Ocean Salt Face and Body Scrub has the ingredients for a mean cocktail.

Lush Cosmetics has taken a very public position on this issue in addition to making an all natural face and body scrub, Ocean Salt is infused with vodka in addition to sea salt and coconut.

microbeads

Microbeads are tiny plastic beads found in personal care products that are toxin magnets and non-biodegradable.

So, are you contributing to a very serious health and environmental problem? How do you feel about the microbead ban? What products do you use to exfoliate? Share in the comment section below.

Happy New You! Jumpstart Your Personal Style

I’ll be honest, 2015 was rough, but I’ve had tougher. It was also exciting, enlightening and showed me that I am resilient, gullible, and an optimistic pessimist. I’ve learned that my refusal to give up is not always a good thing, but my stubbornness isn’t something I’m willing to change. Armed with more wisdom, I’m looking forward; 2015 is over and 2016 is just beginning.

Now is the time when we typically take stock of what we did the previous year and what we would like to do in the present one. Regardless of whether we habitually make resolutions we most likely won’t keep, there is a collective reset, an ‘after a rainstorm’ freshness in the air. I tend to clean house metaphorically. I get rid of people who are toxic and I look at what I can do to improve my physical and mental health.

I’m going to really focus on pinpointing my personal style which means putting more energy into myself, better known as being selfish. I’m a nurturer by nature, so I tend to take care of others needs before my own and I’m not alone in that. If I were one to make resolutions, this a resolution I would always break. I think most of us try to revamp or refresh our look. Unfortunately, coming right off of Christmas, trying to decide which trends I want to embrace or create contrast with my yearly thought to be fiscally responsible, another resolution that wouldn’t stick.

lynnette-10-retouch

Unretouched photo of me just after finishing a four-day braiding project wearing body jewelry.

I  found myself on Born Pretty Store when I was researching a story on ‘glitter roots‘ and spent way too much time in their jewelry department. I usually purchase nail art supplies here, but as a person who recently got into body jewelry, I was hooked on their selection. If you are not familiar, get familiar. Beauty and fashion enthusiasts rave about Born Pretty Store for a reason. They are on top of the current beauty and fashion trends: matte lipsticks, glitter for nails and hair, club clothes, and body jewelry, and the quality is great for how inexpensive it is. Their inventory of beauty and styling tools is pretty impressive as well.

News From The Beautiverse – Pre-Fall and Couture Edition

Gucci-prefall-2015-

Gucci Pre-Fall 2015.

What Exactly Does Pre-Fall Mean?

The pre-fall shows have just ended and the haute couture shows are winding down. They are the appetizers before we sit down for fashion week. I don’t know why they call it fashion week when globally, it lasts for two and a half months. While I’m owning my confusion, when did pre-fall become so popular? I remember when there was no pre-fall which wasn’t that long ago. It seems that the frequency of pre-fall collections has increased dramatically in the last few years, a new reality brought on by the necessities of many entities. Pre-Fall collections are the most wearable of the runway shows and, therefore, earn the most money. Also, If you noticed, many of the fashions worn at recent award shows were pre-fall fresh off the runway. If the term “pre-fall” sneaked up on you like it did me, perhaps this article can clear things up.

Gaultier’s Couture Was Bridezilla Heavy And Full Of Surprises

John Paul Gaultier never ceases to amaze me. His wedding themed Haute Couture show was titled, “61 Façons de Se Dire Oui, or 61 Ways to Say Yes.” His runway show opened with a model stomping the runway with the ‘leaning tower of curlers’on her head as if she wasn’t quite ready for the show. Upon further inspection, she might be the wedding cake because she had a cake topper on top of the curlers. Many of his looks had split personalities and he highlighted several of his all time favorite models mid through. The show closed with supermodel Naomi Campbell looking toned and crafty as the bridal bouquet. Last year he closed the show with burlesque artist Dita Von Teese, who was a lovely butterfly.

Be Careful Not To Spill

Yet another French designer with a marvelous imagination. The encrusted masks worn at the On Aura Tout Vu show needs no explanation because seeing is believing. I just keep thinking that it would be a great accessory on those days that you just don’t want to shave your face.

Pleats and Thank You

Out of all the collections shown at Haute Couture Spring, I was most impressed Christian Dior, perhaps it’s because of the sleek hardware knotted hair:

Now, that’s a ponytail.

Maybe it was the endless amount of pleats:

Lupita Nyong’o REALLY Likes Elie Saab and Hopefully Jared Leto

Elie Saab Pre Fall 2015

Hollywood and fashion “It” girl Lupita Nyong’o  looked absolutely stunning, as usual, in not one, but two Elie Saab dresses Sunday. Once again, she proved she can do no wrong, this time in a floor length, striped floral print gown that she wore to the SAG Awards, and then a shorter version to The Weinstein Company and Netflix’s 2015 SAG Awards after-party.

Her hair was elegant in a cornrowed top bun, and her best accessory was rumored boyfriend, Jared Leto. I don’t say this often but, I want to be this woman. She has style, she has grace, she has beauty, she has talent, she is brilliant, she has a wardrobe to die for, and she has my man, allegedly.

Nyong’o and Leto waiting in the wings before co-presenting the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries to Mark Ruffalo for The Normal Heart.

I don’t know if she’s actually dating Jared Leto, but she should be. I have had the biggest crush on him since Requiem For A Dream. He is absolutely beautiful and so talented, and the thing about him is I’m not completely sure he knows how gorgeous he is. The front man for 30 Seconds to Mars is rumored to be cast as a badly scarred Joker for an upcoming Marvel Comics Suicide Squad movie. Either way,  he is a joy to look at. Get ’em girl.

Micaela Erlanger styled both stars’ looks, and they presented at the ceremony together as well.

What do you think of Lupita’s dress and the rumored hot Hollywood couple?

I Want -Blackbird And The Snow Gold And Diamond Celestial Earrings

Blackbird-and-Snow-earrings

14k yellow gold and diamond earrings, $4,020, at Fragments, New York,

Aren’t they heavenly? These absolutely stunning yellow gold and diamond celestial earrings by Blackbird And The Snow are subtle enough for day and eye-catching enough for night. I found these beauties on W magazine online and I gasped when I saw how much were, but upon research, I found Blackbird And The Snow is designed and owned by fellow Coloradoan, Boulder jewelry designer and recording artist Marie-Juliette Bird.

Bird’s ability to incorporate pre-industrial artisanal techniques with unique metals and stone cuts to create delicate, yet innovatively modern cerebral pieces suddenly justifies the $4,000 price tag. The crescent moon and stars makes me want to lay down and dream about how badly I want these earrings.

Holly Burn Spoofs Vogue’s 73 Questions With Victoria Beckham

Holly_Burn2

Last week I wrote a couple of posts about Victoria Beckham (I guess last week was unintentionally all about Victoria Beckham) and one of the mentions was in my weekly newsletter “News From The Beautiverse” about her stint on Vogue’s 73 Questions series. British comedian, actor, and writer Holly Burn decided to spoof it (somebody had to) and it is absolutely hilarious. See for yourself.

73 Questions with Victoria Beckham Vogue – Spoof:

Victoria had no problem with this is as she posted it on her twitter account. She obviously has a sense of humor and I am sure she is smiling on the inside. Here is the original version.

73 Questions with Victoria Beckham:

Tell me what you think about both versions in the comment section and see what else Mrs. David Beckham is up to.

Victoria, Victoria Beckham x Nails Inc. Inspired Nail Art

VictoriaBeckham-nail-lacquer-nail-art

Nail art inspired by Nails Inc., VVB nail polish duo: Judo Red and Bamboo White. Nail art by Chalkboard Nails.

I was working on a completely unrelated post when during a moment of procrastination, I came across the Victoria, Victoria Beckham x NAILS INC. polish line on Chalkboard Nails. The limited edition lacquer line was inspired by the Victoria, Victoria Beckham Spring/Summer 2015 RTW collection, and Sarah Waite created the nail art based on Designer Fabien Baron bottle design. There is a great deal of inspiration happening by way of Victoria Beckham. Listen, if my man looked like hers, I could inspire all of this greatness too.

VictoriaBeckham-nail-lacquer-bamboo-white      VictoriaBeckham-nail-lacquer-judo-red2

I was so impressed by the packaging that I stopped what I was working on to do a quick post on what I would consider the nail polish collaboration of the year. I know it’s early, but I have a good feeling about this.

The bottle, much like the fashion collection, has a Japanese aesthetic. The polish is encased in Venetian glass with a frosted black or white matte finish and the polish color can only be seen from the side.  From what I can tell, the Judo Red resembles a burnt orange, and the Bamboo White is along the lines of bone with a drop of peachy rose tint. It’s simple, sleek, and chic, making it a coveted collection item. The $25 price tag seems steep, but next to some other high-end nail polishes it’s probably worth it.

If you are the type of person who is provoked to buy based on packaging, you are in big trouble. I want to be seen using this polish.

March Lacquer Legion Submission

20140406-223529.jpg

So this months lacquer legion theme was luck, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day I’m sure, but it could be anything that symbolizes ‘luck traditional and otherwise.

Lucky for me I had the sense to start early and create two manicures because the second one was I did the night before the challenge was a disaster.

I’m a little seriously bummed because I haven’t been able to dedicate the kind if time and attention I want to my site due to my health and work sucking up all of my mental and physical energy. Adding to my frustration is when i do find a minute during the day to post or edit a faulty mobile WordPress application won’t show previews. I don’t have to discuss the lack of working rain cells at the end if the day to any of you I am sure.

In order to soothe my frustration, I have been practicing nail art more and I think I will start posting more articles on that topic. It has been a great stress reliever and I don’t need the same kind of brain cells that I do when writing and researching articles.

If you want to see more nail art posts let me know and to see what others have submitted for the March challenge use #LLlucky in any social media platform.

Personally, I would love to see what kind if talent my followers have so participate in the lacquer legion challenges.

The Best Makeup To Cover Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a skin condition that darkens the skin and results in uneven skin tone and can be very difficult to cover. I am personally affected by this condition, and it makes life difficult. The condition is caused by many factors; disease, sun exposure, medications, and hormonal changes are just a few of the stimulants that can spark an outbreak. Finding the best makeup to cover hyperpigmentation well can be expensive, especially if there is a large area to cover, such as the legs. In addition to finding a product that covers well, a product that doesn’t transfer onto clothing great.  Few things are as embarrassing as thinking you are super cute at an event, only to go to the bathroom and find that your brown foundation has feathered onto your sheer turquoise ruffled blouse and not one of your “friends” bothered to tell you. Transferring makeup also limits clothing options and can ruin clothing because it doesn’t always come off in the wash or at the dry cleaners.

Make Up For Ever Concealer

The Make Up For Ever line is sold exclusively through Sephora. The Full Cover Concealer is designed to cover tattoos, scars, burns, and other skin maladies flawlessly and is available in 12 shades. It is full coverage, oil-free, and the light texture has a matte finish that stays put. There is an entire cosmetic line that works in conjunction with the concealer, including the Precision Highlighter & Concealer Brush which has high quality 100 percent fiber bristles. This multi-purpose makeup tool is a godsend for precise concealer application.

Dermablend Cover Creme and Intense Powder Camo

Dermablend has been around for over 30 years and is well respected by makeup artists and the medical community, and as a lupus survivor with massive discoloration, it was the first product I found that disguised my hyperpigmentation and allowed me to wear what I wanted without being self-conscience about it coming off on my clothing.

Originally, the foundation was very hard to work with because it had a clayish consistency and the colors were limited, but it worked, did not transfer, and is waterproof. But after the reformulation, the Dermablend Cover Creme texture is creamy and much easier to work with, plus there are more shades to choose from. One of the newest additions to the Dermablend line is the Intense Power Camo, a highly pigmented concealer that covers and camouflages irregularities. Also, you can determine the finish and coverage levels with various application methods and they provide before and after photos and application tips.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 and Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation

MAC cosmetics are fantastic for covering skin imperfections because there are so many shades and formulas that cater to different coverage needs that finding the right one for you is never an issue. The Studio Fix collection hides discoloration without making you look like you have piles of makeup on, plus all MAC cosmetics have a lot of pigments so a little goes a long way. Their sales representatives are also makeup artists, and they know a great deal about tones and undertones, something most people know very little about and they are happy to educate you. I use a combination; Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 and the Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation and together they cover my hyperpigmentation beautifully without looking obvious. While it can transfer to clothing and is not waterproof, the Studio Fix powder provides some staying power and again, MAC has the most comprehensive color collection, guaranteeing a perfect color match.

Black Opal Total Coverage Foundation

One that I am dying to try next is Black Opal Total Coverage Foundation. The 2-in-1 formula is part foundation, part concealer and provides a smooth coverage that camouflages and evens out skin tone in one step. It also has skin-protecting minerals that protect against environmental stress inducers.

February Lacquer Legion Submission Featuring Essie

061-small

February’s Lacquer Legion submission was created from a manicure I found on Essie, and I decided to recreate it but with Essie’s Ignite the Night instead of Chinchilly. The problem is that as lovely as this Sssssexy is, I have never been able to create passable magnetic nail art with it.

Essie-in-a-cinch

Essie nail art – In A Cinch: This was my inspiration for February’s Lacquer Legion Submission. #LLadoration

Because it was only barely visible on one nail, I decided to add some studs from the Sally Hansen I Heart Nail Art Stud Kit to salvage the situation. Such a shame, especially since I use Sally Hansen Magnetic Nail Color as well and have never had a problem. Maybe that’s why I have it in every color.

It’s a shame that I could not make the magnetic nail art work with this project. The polish is Essie’s Sssssexy magnetic nail polish.

I hope to see some of your contributions to the Lacquer Legion’s monthly nail challenge. If you do decide to take part, please, please, please let me know so I can give you as much support as you give me.

Do You Agree? What Trends Need To Die?

Coco-UGG

Trends change constantly, some stick around for years, some for a season, and some never die. Every season has a new black and for New York Fashion Week, its gold. Seriously, why can’t gold just be the new “it” color and let black be black? Nothing replaces black. Am I wrong?

ugg-sequin

Classic Short Sparkles – That’s right, sequins.

Blaise Crystal – Is any respectable biker going to respect you in these boots?

UGG-mini-bailey-button-neon

Mini Bailey Button Neon – UGG’s are not cheap. You can get this pair for a measly $135.

Yahoo Shine has enlisted a bevy of fashion insiders to share a long list of trends that have passed their expiration dates, and if you remember, I have my contender, but it didn’t make the list. Out of all of them, I agree with Coco Rocha’s choice – UGG boots. Ugh! I don’t understand how wearing this Australian import, especially in the summer, EVER became trendy but this cancels out the Hemsworth’s. And people are STILL wearing them, and these suckers aren’t cheap. The least you will pair for a pair of women’s boots on the UGG site is $135. Wait, it gets better. The line has expanded into mot-chic, sequins, and gasp, neon. I guess there is no accounting for taste. If you are curious to see if your choice made the list, visit What Trends Need To Die? Double Take: Donna Karan’s Graphic Blanket Cape

Donna-Karan-F-W-RTW-2014

You gotta love Donna Karan. Her co-ed fashion show was wonderfully edgy and dare I say, very New York. There are so many looks I love from her show, but this is the one that stood out for me, and I am a sucker for a cape. At first, I thought I was a cape dress but now I think it’s a skirt and cape. Whatever it is, it’s fantastic.

▶ Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Spring/Summer 2014 ft. Dita Von Teese – FashionTV

gaultier-ss-couture-2014-1 gaultier-ss-couture-2014-2

Paris Couture Fashion Week has been well underway for a few days, and I went completely against my normal urge to post Chanel and went straight to what really played with my emotions, the Jean Paul Gaultier runway show featuring Dita Von Tesse. Why? Anyone that gorgeous that sees past the distraction that is Marilyn Manson and finds his soul is truly fascinating.

Have fun with this fun and flirty collection and tell me what you think of the theme.

If you aren’t familiar with FashionTV, this is a good time to check out the present and upcoming runway shows that us mere mortals don’t have access to. There is live streaming, interviews, and anything that is remotely attached to the fashion world. For me, couture is the most fun because it is so creative and over-the-top, and the challenge of dialing it back to reinvent the looks for the real world is like a roller coaster thrill. I really marvel at those who can execute creativity and talent so flawlessly. Sigh… I would wear many of these looks just the way they are with absolutely nowhere to go.

Whoops! But Check Out These Tutorials Since You’re Here.

Another Whoops! So sorry. Obviously I am working on a post but my fingers are faster than the computer. Stay tuned for a fantastic post on my favorite subject; Nail Art with my nail art failures as the subject. Until then, please enjoy a couple of tutorials, the first is about nail maintenance that will promote longer, lovelier nails, and the other is about how to master water marbling courtesy of my new favorite nail artist, ProfessionalDQ. The DQ is for Drama Queen and subscribing to her YouTube channel is a brilliant idea.

I am fascinated with Water Marbling, but not nearly as much as ProfessionalDQ’s is fascinated with unicorns and rainbows, she mentions and creates them often in her tutorials. Check her out, because she is entertaining, funny, self-deprecating, quirky, and talented. Personally, I think she should have looked into modeling; she is 6 ft. tall and gorgeous.

OPI Designer Series Introduces Raw Granite Matte Glitter Polish

I am a major nail art fiend, and I absolutely love fingernail polish. There was a time when I was completely against glitter polishes because I thought they were gaudy and I wasn’t crazy about matte finishes either. I have seen beautiful nail art that incorporates matte and glitter, and I am hooked. If I wasn’t already hooked, I would have been after seeing OPI’s Designer Series Raw Granite nail lacquers. The combination of a matte finish that sparkles is absolutely gorgeous.

OPI-DS-pewter-lacquerologist

The new polishes are part of OPI’s  designer series and contain diamond dust. They are following the footsteps of Azature, a polish and luxury jewelry brand I am obsessed with owning and have written several posts where I mention Black Diamond nail lacquer, a glistening polish infused with black diamonds. Azature is most famous for making a $250,000 bottle of nail polish, the most expensive bottle of nail polish to date. From what I can tell, the difference between the Raw Granite polishes and Azature is the Granite Series is earthy and its sheen is subtle, while Azature is glamorous and glitzy.

OPI-DS-lapis-lacquerologist

OPI Designer Series Raw Granite nail lacquer in Lapis. Photo courtesy of the Lacquerologist.

The diamond dust polish comes in pewter and lapis and is meant to be worn without a topcoat which will result in a satin like finish that is satiny with dimension. While it may look like it would have a rough texture, it goes on smoothly and stays that way. I rock deep blue on my nails constantly, so I am extremely excited about this new addition to the Designer Series. I love how the silver hexagon glitter in the pewter polish gives Emily, a.k.a. the Lacquerologist’s nails added oomph.  These polishes can go elegant or edgy and the colors deepen when given a topcoat.

What Is The Best Mascara For Contact Lens Wearers?

Le Volume de Chanel Mascara

Choosing a mascara that won’t irritate or dry out your eyes is a must for contact lens wearers.

There are many advantages to wearing contact lenses. Contacts are liberating because they improve peripheral vision, you are not constantly aware of them because of their weight, and you don’t have to own several pairs of glasses or sunglasses if you want to your eyewear to compliment your wardrobe. Eye makeup choices may need to change as well because you won’t need to apply as much eye makeup in order to bring out your eyes. It is a good idea to discuss what mascara is best for contact lens wearers with your friends and optometrist.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) advises contact lens wearers to stay away from lash extending and waterproof mascaras. Lash extending mascaras contain fibers that can flake off into the eyes, causing pain, irritation, and destruction to your makeup job.

Mascara Application

Insert soft contact lenses before applying makeup.

Waterproof mascaras and eyeliners are not recommended either because they repel moisture, something your eyes need for comfort and to keep contacts in the eyes. Dry eyes get irritated, and rubbing them can dislodge the contact.

The AOA also suggests that soft contacts be inserted prior to applying makeup. The only exception would be with hard contact wearers. Look for sensitive or hypoallergenic mascara that is ophthalmologist tested.

If makeup gets into your eye, gently rub the lens to remove it, suggests OPTI-FREE, a supplier of contact lens products. Other suggestions from OPTI-FREE include:

  • Wash and dry hands before inserting and removing lenses.

  • Take contacts out before removing mascara.

  • Stay away from oil based makeup removers.

  • Avoid false eyelashes because the adhesive can cause damage to the lenses.

  • Avoid wearing contacts if your eyes are irritated, red, swollen, or infected.

So what is the best mascara for contact lens wearers? Mascaras that are smudge-free, hypoallergenic, and resists flaking like L’Oreal Voluminous Full-Definition Mascara. It is kind to sensitive eyes, recommended by ophthalmologist, and resists smudging and flaking.

Neutrogena Makeup Remover

My personal favorites: Maybelline Lash Stiletto in Very Black and Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover

Personally, I use a mascara primer before applying mascara because it prevents the mascara from flaking off and discourages clumping. This is great if you can’t give up your lengthening mascaras which usually contain fibers like my favorite mascara, Maybelline Lash Stiletto Ultimate Length Mascara in Very Black. It defines my long, curly eyelashes and allows me to build on length without clumping, even without a primer. It has a strengthening conditioner and comes off easily with an oil-free makeup remover. I use Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover which removes mascara beautifully, even waterproof mascara. I have tried more expensive mascaras, and they don’t work nearly as well as this one does for me.

It may take some time to adjust to a new mascara but there are so many options that you’re sure to find more than one that enhances your eyes while keeping them comfortable and healthy.

Project Runway: Say Goodbye to Unicorns

Yeah, Timothy is gone!!! Now I can enjoy Project Runway fully! Three weeks of sucking. I dare anyone to find one person that can say what he brought to the table was in any way, shape, or form worthy of the runway. Another unconventional challenge, this time with materials from prizes won on a fun-filled trip to Coney Island and a team challenge with Miranda finally did him in. But he still believes in unicorns. Whatever…

Team Helen and Kate won based on ingenuity because they made a dress out of sombreros. I must give them props while disagreeing with the judges choice (Kelly Osbourne was the guest judge) because I think Dom and Alexandria had the best outfit. It reminds me of Japanese fashion, cute and whimsical. I mean seriously, which outfit would you prefer? You can’t sit down in an outfit made of sombreros.

Beyoncé Stuns With New Pixie Cut

beyonce-pixie-hair-cut-instyle

Beyoncé shows her fans her new hair cut on Instagram.

No, it’s not a wig. Everyone, and I mean everyone is going gaga over Beyoncé’s new haircut with some speculating that it is a wig, and she would never shear her long locks. Well, she did and I like it. It is a little difficult to see the long hair gone after seeing her with it for, well, since day one. But honestly, it was time for a change and after the fan incident, it makes sense.

beyonce-princess-braid

Beyonce with a Princess Braid before cutting of her long locks.

The reviews are mixed with some thinking she should have left well enough alone and others loving it and swearing that Beyoncé, has empowered women with the blond pixie cut (Really???) that longtime hairstylist Neal Farinah of the Neal Farinah Salon created. I don’t know about empowering others with a hair cut, but Emma Watson tweeted her approval as well as her own restraint.

I Want: Michelle Williams’ Edgy Pixie Cut

Michelle Williams is the new face of Louis Vuitton‘s new accessories campaign.

Is this not the cutest haircut ever? Michelle Williams rocks a carefree and funky ‘do that definitely suits her in this Louis Vuitton accessories ad. Her hair was styled by Sam McKnight (genius),and the gorgeous actress was lucky to have the one and only Stéphane Marais grace her face with her enviable artistic skills. Love the lips.

Michelle Williams and the W or Capucines bag and wearing Marc Jacobs

Michelle is wearing a coat from the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2013 campaign.

If this choppy coiffe inspires you, make it happen with a hairstylist that knows how to cut hair. It’s worth it to spend a little more for a great haircut. There is nothing more soul sapping than a butchered cut, and it’s not worth all the potential bad hair days. Seriously, research and splurge and if you have found a stellar stylist that can cut the sh*t of out some hair, don’t be selfish, pass the word around. Let’s make a concentrated effort to eradicate bad hair days.

Cassie-side-shave

Cassie is one of the few people that looks good with her hair half shaved.

Evidently, Michelle’s haircut looks good even during the growing out process. The proof is in this photo taken at Old School in NYC. It reminds me of that asymmetrical style trend worn by Rhianna, Cassie, and Amanda Bynes where one side is long and the other side is shaved except Michelle’s cut is a little more balanced and less extreme. It’s also great because it’s low maintenance and the messier it looks the better.

Michelle Williams at Kate Young For Target Launch on April 9 in New York City.

Michelle Williams is super stylish at Kate Young For Target Launch on April 9 in New York City. Her hair looks just as good grown out.

I can’t say I’m a diehard Michelle Williams fan I am likely to watch a film if I know she is in it because she is a talented actress, she is picky about the roles she chooses and she makes great choices.  I find her intriguing because while she appears demure there is nothing demure about her sense of style. She’s gritty, and there is something truly magical about her which makes me take multiple looks when I see her on the red carpet. I like grit but I love how she represents edgy hairstyles even better.

How to Make Nail Art Last Longer

3D nail art

I don’t know about you, but there is nothing more frustrating than getting a cute manicure and having it chip before you can you can enjoy it. It is even more frustrating when you are doing your own do-it-yourself nail art and it doesn’t last long enough to show off. It’s not a secret that nail art is the biggest trend since ombré colored hair. It’s an accessory, and an alternate way to update an outfit or give it a little oomph. Here are some great tips to give your manicure a little longevity.

How to Make Nail Art Last Longer.

Manicure-tools CND stickey base Seche Vite Top Coat

A great place to shop for nail art is Sephora. They have the newest brands, colors, and nail kits. Many of their nail art kits have tutorials, and I have found brands I have never heard of, or only saw in the U.K. Sephora is product junkie heaven. (Hi, my name is Lynnette and I am a product-aholic. Hi Lynnette!) It’s nice to go there online, or in person and window shop, or try to window shop. I am not always successful; like I said, product junkie.
